Septic System Replacement on the Central Coast
Tanks crack, drainfields die, and systems installed decades ago reach the end of their design life. Replacement puts a modern, permitted system in place of the failed one — typically $8,000–$22,000+ in California, depending on what has to be replaced.

Repair or replace? The honest test
A good contractor replaces a system only when repair stops being rational: a structurally failed tank (cracked, corroded, collapsed baffles that can’t be rebuilt), a drainfield that has biomat-clogged beyond recovery, or a system so undersized or badly sited that it fails again every wet season.
If the tank is sound and the field is salvageable, repair is the right call — see tank repair and drainfield repair. The site visit exists to make this determination with evidence: tank inspection, field condition, and how the system has actually been performing.
What replacement looks like
Most replacements reuse the homesite but not the old components: a new tank (concrete, fiberglass or plastic, sized to the home), a new drainfield — often in the reserve area if the original field location is exhausted — new lines, and county inspection at each required stage. The old tank is pumped, then crushed and filled or removed, as county rules require for proper abandonment.
Because a replacement is permitted work, the county reviews the design against current OWTS standards, which may differ from the standards your original system was built under. That occasionally means a different field location or an advanced treatment requirement — one reason replacement quotes only firm up after the site evaluation and perc work.
Living through a replacement
Homeowners usually stay in the home during replacement, with short windows of no water use while lines are switched over. Your contractor sequences excavation, tank setting and field construction to keep disruption down, and the county’s inspection schedule shapes the exact timeline. Ask for the sequence in writing with your quote.
