Drainfield Repair & Replacement

The drainfield is where your septic system actually treats wastewater — and it’s the component that fails most often. Ponding water, sewage odor outdoors, or an unusually green stripe of grass over the field are its distress signals.

Why drainfields fail

A drainfield fails when the soil around its trenches can no longer absorb effluent as fast as the house produces it. The common causes: years of solids escaping an unpumped tank and clogging the soil (a biomat that grows too thick), hydraulic overload from a growing household or leaking fixtures, tree roots in the lines, crushed or settled trenches, and — in low-lying Central Coast spots — seasonally high groundwater that leaves the field nowhere to drain.

Each cause has a different fix, which is why the diagnosis matters more than the sales pitch.

Repairs that can save a field

  • Rest and rotation: some systems have dual fields or room to rest a saturated field while flow is diverted
  • Distribution fixes: a failed distribution box or uneven lines can drown one trench while others sit dry — re-leveling or replacing the box restores even flow
  • Root and line clearing: root intrusion and localized clogs are repairable without touching the whole field
  • Load reduction: fixing running toilets and spacing laundry loads can pull a marginal field back from the edge
  • Tank pumping and effluent filter: stopping solids carryover protects whatever field life remains

When the field has to be replaced

A field whose soil is fully clogged or collapsed gets replaced — usually in the reserve area your lot was required to keep for exactly this purpose. California drainfield replacements typically run $5,000 – $15,000, driven by field size, soil conditions and access for equipment. The work is permitted through your county OWTS program, and the new field is designed from current perc and soil data, not copied from the old one.
