Septic & Sewer Line Jetting

When the tank isn’t full but the drains still back up, the problem is often in the pipe. High-pressure water jetting scours roots, grease and scale out of the line so wastewater can reach the tank again.

Where jetting helps

  • The building sewer — the pipe from your house to the tank. Grease, wipes and roots collect here, especially in older clay or cast-iron lines.
  • Tank-to-field piping — the outlet line and distribution box, where solids that escaped an overfull tank settle.
  • Some leach lines — where the system has access points (cleanouts) and the pipe can take it, jetting can clear biomat and debris from perforated laterals. Whether it’s worth doing depends on the field’s age and condition.

Jetting is usually paired with a camera inspection, which shows what’s actually in the pipe: roots, a belly where the line sags, a crack, or a collapse. That footage decides whether the line needs cleaning or repair.

When jetting is the wrong answer

  • A full tank. If the tank hasn’t been pumped in years, start there.
  • A collapsed or broken pipe. Jetting can’t fix a missing section of pipe; the camera finds it and the section gets repaired.
  • A drainfield that has failed. If the soil itself won’t accept water, clean pipes won’t change that. See drainfield repair & replacement.

Roots come back. Clearing roots restores flow, but the opening they came through is still there. If the camera shows root intrusion at a joint, ask about repairing that joint so you’re not paying for jetting every year.

Preventing the next clog

Most line clogs are made in the kitchen and bathroom: cooking grease, “flushable” wipes, and food solids. Our guide to what not to flush on a septic system covers the short list that prevents most of them.
